Industry Professionals Say
“Infiltration is so high that there hasn’t been any water captured in the monitoring wells. The PICP is performing adequately being subject to parked cars, traffic and street sweeping."
“From day one, the Board wanted a permeable lot, a view heightened by the long-term drought in the southeast which drastically lowered lake levels and threatened drinking water supplies. They visited pervious concrete and permeable interlocking concrete pavement projects in the region. This raised everyone’s confidence in these types of systems. The board went with PICP because of easy repairs and a better looking surface.”

1,000 – 10,000 Square Feet (tie)Chickasaw Medical Center Heartstone of Oklahoma Ada, Oklahoma Manufacturer: Pavestone The Chickasaws wanted the exterior to be as impressive as the state-of-the art hospital that they built. To achieve this, they hired a team of engineers and architects to create the layout of a very impressive patio garden. They wanted something that would be both aesthetically pleasing, and also convey their Native American history. The most challenging aspect of this project was bringing their intricate designs to life. There are multiple accent lines going through the body of the concrete pavers, and all of these lines take a jagged path, and they intersect at what seems like random. In the end the Chickasaw Nation was very happy with the way the project turned out. |

1,000 – 10,000 Square Feet This project consisted of upgrading an already upscale wedding and banquet facility on Connecticut’s scenic shoreline. The main goal was to expand its outdoor event venue by creating a more spacious and relaxing environment for every type of party. Specific challenges included the need to execute the renovation swiftly and efficiently to minimize any reduction in event bookings. The beautiful new outdoor hardscape incorporates over 7500 square feet of pavers, 20 custom circle patterns and 250 tons of processed base stone, and allows the facility to host four simultaneous events, three of which include waterfront access. |
10,000 – 50,000 Square Feet![]() Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Hotel & Resort Pacific Outdoor Living Oxnard, California Manufacturer: AngelusBlock Company, Inc. This was a challenging commercial project due to its intricate curving design, massive pool deck areas and the fact that there were guests still in the hotel during construction. It involved removing a large amount of old concrete pool decking and walkways from the existing swimming pool area. There was 83 feet of tumbled charcoal coping installed for the two swimming pools. The pavers extended out through a wide main entry and also led to various walkways for the four surrounding hotel buildings and the parking lot. The large entryway leading to the pools had to blend in with many curving landscaped islands and the two pools with many sweeping curves. Due to the amount of curves in the pools, landscaped borders and islands, not to mention all the skimmer tops, hand rails and brass drains, each paver was cut precisely to closely fit every one of these intricate areas. |
More than 50,000 Square Feet![]() The Boulevard Mall of Louisiana Syrstone, Inc. Baton Rouge, Louisiana Manufacturer: Nitterhouse Masonry Products, LLC The hardscape installer chosen to construct the expansive pedestrian boulevard and roof deck designed for this upscale lifestyle center, located in a high-profile mall, was faced with several major challenges: installing 85,000-sq.-ft. of pavers (including 50,000 sq. ft. of complex and argyle/checkerboard patterns) within nine weeks from start to finish; doing the installation simultaneously with other trades working at the site; and creating a 13,000-sq.-ft., completely flat, totally paved surface above an existing sloped roof. The roof-deck area proved to be the most challenging. Each 24” x 24” architectural paver was installed using an exclusive, proprietary SRS pedestal-set leveling system developed by the installer’s engineers. |
Clay Brick |
1,000 – 10,000 Square Feet![]() Miami Conservancy District Outdoor Enterprise Dayton, Ohio Manufacturer: Whitacre Greer Company Managing storm water quantity and improving storm water quality became the mission. Sustainable design practices for the courtyard project included xeriscaping, bioretention, catch basin Dandy Sacks, a gravel water table drainage system, and permeable clay pavers. Since the site was flat and bioretention areas were adjacent in the landscape beds, permeable pavers also became an obvious decision. The main gathering space in the courtyard became the focal point of the project and a link to the MCD Headquarters Building. A pattern emerged in the permeable pavers to help the project stand out above most projects. The Greek key design revealed in the chocolate / ivory contrast helps the outdoor courtyard be linked to the architecture of the existing MCD’s headquarters. |
10,000 – 50,000 Square Feet![]() Imaginary Garden Fred Adams Paving Company Cary, North Carolina Manufacturer: Pine Hall Brick Company Imaginary Garden is a promenade made of three colors of clay brick pavers, roughly 15 feet wide by 800 feet long, which serves as a natural divider between the two halves of the park. The promenade has a background of deep red clay brick pavers, into which has been set a design made of brown and buff-colored pavers. The design depicts a long, twisting vine that runs the full length of the promenade before entering a plaza, where it bursts into bloom. The design was done by a nationally recognized sculptor, who specified clay brick pavers because the material was native to the surrounding geographic region and often used as a building material for nearby homes and commercial buildings. Slivers of pavers of different colors had to be hand-measured, marked, cut and fitted precisely next to each other, then compared to the design, to ensure that the lines that the designer contemplated were clean and unbroken. |

1,000 – 10,000 Square Feet ![]() Lake Arrowhead Golf Club Pauls Landscaping Nekoosa, Wisconsin Manufacturer: County Materials Corp Patrons to the Lake Arrowhead Golf Club can now enjoy the views overlooking the golf course while relaxing or dining on a newly completed, spacious patio. The patio is a beautiful extension to the upper clubhouse that previously offered no outdoor patio areas. Newly installed doors allow patrons to access and take advantage of outside seating for dining and relaxing. This is an added benefit in light of the new smoking restrictions inside public facilities. The raised patio was constructed with concrete retaining walls in a two-tone brown color that compliments the clubhouse architecture. The serpentine retaining walls were terraced to achieve the proper elevation for the patio with the upper entry doors. The terraces also accommodate vibrant planting beds that provide a beautiful backdrop to the course. The patio’s construction with concrete hardscape products ensures lasting durability for the high-use area that accommodates a large amount of people traffic during peak golfing months. Concrete products also minimize maintenance time and costs. |
10,000 – 50,000 Square Feet![]() The Shops at Sycamore Creek Soil Retention Products, Inc. Corona, California Manufacturer: Soil Retention Products, Inc. A 36,000 segmental retaining wall system is the foundation for The Shops at Sycamore Creek retail center in Corona, CA The site is primarily in a fill condition and no building construction was possible before pad delivery. The grading and wall installation segment of the project was completed in Fall 2007. Maximum wall height reaches 34 feet and covers a distance of 1,400 l.f.. The project is highly visible from heavily traveled I-15 and a fully planted wall face was required by the local agency to soften the look of the massive retaining structure. The plantable and free-draining system typically does not require gravel behind the blocks. |

More than 5,000 sq. feetMcGraw Residence Oak Leaf Landscaping Howard, Ohio Manufacturer: Oberfield's Inc. The homeowners goal was to improve the overall aesthetics and maintenance of the bank, while also adding functionality to the project. The contractor faced numerous challenges in handling the material safely and effectively on the steep bank while also designing in elevations for both the walls and patio on the embankment area. Each unit was hand-tumbled, giving it a rock-faced, chiseled appearance that the homeowners desired. The tiered walls and patio area now allow the homeowner to enjoy a once unusable space and creates a welcome view from the lake below. |

Under 1,000 Square Feet![]() Owens Residence Landis Hardscape Specialist Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Manufacturer: Unilock This project was designed for entertaining. The homeowners wanted many different areas included into this project. There are four unique areas in this design. There is a seating wall with a gas fire pit at the rear of the project. 1,000 – 5,000 Square Feet![]() Lamontagne Residence PA Landscape Group Inc. Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania Manufacturer: Techo Bloc The client wanted a pond-like pool containing a natural waterfall as the foundation of the design. The challenges were the steeply sloped grade and wooded area at the rear of the property. Grade changes, runoff potential, preservation of wooded areas and lighting for safety and night use were all considerations of the design. The backbone of the construction was native ironstone. Two hundred tons of rock were brought in and and placed before pool excavation began. The grade change required 36 steps. The challenge was to make navigating this change comfortable, almost seeming effortless. On the outside edge of the pool deck a fireplace and seating area establish another vantage point to enjoy the sights and sounds of the waterfall all while being nestled near the warm glow of the fire. The fireplace, built by others, anchors the landscape design while providing a focal point. |
More than 5,000 Square Feet![]() Harmon Residence Stone Creations Scottsdale, Arizona Manufacturer: Phoenix Paver Manufacturing Over 21,000 square feet of tumbled pavers were installed in the driveway, patios and pool areas. The tumbled pavers are accented with a non tumbled paver used in the border and in bands throughout. In the driveway there is a double border used at exact angles around a fountain and down the driveway to break up the mass of the pavers. The backyard consisted of four patios and two pools all at different grade levels that were all connected with paver walkways. Detailed planning and layout was involved before any construction commenced. 6000 square feet of pavers were installed in the backyard with over 400 lineal feet of steps connecting all the patios and decks together. The walkways and steps all led to smaller more private patios which made the pavers appear softer. The project from grading to completion took eight weeks. |

Under 1,000 Square Feet![]() Reese Residence Switzer's Nursery & Landscaping, Inc. Northfield, Minnesota Manufacturer: Boral Brick The Reese Residence main objective was to increase the size and usability of the outdoor living environment while maintaining its original historic nature. Additionally, the pedestrian traffic patterns needed to be organized and defined. Clay pavers and natural stones were chosen for the beauty and historical correctness. A traditional basket weave pattern with a single soldier course was used throughout the project. Two different paver color blends were mixed in a 70/30 percent ratio to create a truly unique look that accented the home’s paint pallet. Curving walkways flow to the side and rear of the home. The transitional spaces throughout the paving are marked by a subtle addition of corners in the pattern. The new back porch gently descends onto the clay paver patio where the homeowner is able to sit by the fire pit, picnic around the table or stroll thru on the way to the front or back yard. Low-voltage lighting assists in the presentation of evening grandeur that the house demands. |
Segmental Retaining Wall |
1,000 – 5,000 Square Feet![]() Landels Residence Wickenburg Landscape & Irrigation, Inc Wickenburg, Arizona Manufacturer: PaveStone Challenges specific to this job were three fold. First, was the replacement of a tiered railroad tie wall that had failed while trying to save the existing mature trees on the lower tier. Second the wall which is adjacent to a wash, needed to be protected from eroding during flooding in heavy monsoon rains, and deal with the property drainage around and through the wall from the top. Third the project allowed for vehicle traffic along the north part of wall to within three feet of wall edge. Keeping the entire project dry during non work days and installing temporary drainage through and around project was a challenge. The final project simply out did everyone's expectations for the finish grade and the base of the wall was secured with two feet deep rip rap rock area to help deflect seasonal floods. |
