ICPI staff held the first Academic Instructors Course in Chantilly, VA on July 10-11. The course served as a key element in the implementation of the Workforce Development Program. The ICPI Board of Directors approved the recommendation to allow the Concrete Paver Installer Course to be integrated into landscape construction programs taught to students at high schools and post-secondary schools.
In February, the Board allocated funds to train instructors who would teach the program and staff reached out to roughly 50 schools to explain the new program. Course participants included six instructors from:
- Shasta College, Redding, CA
- Alamance Community College, Graham, NC
- Cuyahoga Community College, Highland Hills, OH
- Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI
- College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, IL
Instructors completed the Concrete Paver Installer Course, with emphasis and discussion on how to deliver materials to students. Additionally, staff had the opportunity to conduct a focus group with participants on how to best promote a career in hardscape construction to young individuals.
ICPI intends to offer additional academic instructor training events throughout the next year, with dates and locations to be determined based on interest. Members aware of high schools or post-secondary schools with hardscape construction programs are asked to send instructors’ contact information to ICPI Director of Engineering Robert Bowers at email@example.com for future consideration.
