ICPI, Keystone Hardscapes and Oldcastle APG partnered with Goodwill of North Georgia to offer a Boot Camp course in Decatur, Georgia, on June 29-30. This Boot Camp was a pilot program for Goodwill of North Georgia, which provided each candidate with a physical capacity/medical exam, drug test, and a background screening. Each student was also provided with a four-day training session by Goodwill that included OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR, and soft skills – a savings of more than $500 up front for employers.
Representatives from Keystone Hardscapes and Oldcastle provided tools and materials for the labs and were onsite to assist with the event. Local contractors were offered the opportunity to participate in the hands-on lab portion of the event and hire the students onsite, and ICPI provided assistance with logistics for the event so the best practices can be documented and replicated in other markets where demand for employees is high.
The six participants in the course learned the basics of hardscape installations, including an overview of ICP systems, the phases of a paver project, tools and terminology, safety, soil characteristics, base preparation and construction, geotextile installation, edge restraints, bedding sand, paver selection and installation, joint sand installation, specialty applications, and finishing the project. Five local contractors visited during Boot Camp to observe the participants in person, and all the candidates received job applications from local contractors who are hiring.
