Virginia Tech earned first place for the Hardscape Event at the 40th Annual National Collegiate Landscape Competition (NCLC) on March 16-19, 2016, hosted by Mississippi State University.
In order to qualify, teams had to write a test to participate in the event. There were a total of 41 teams that qualified to compete, with Virginia Tech’s Justice Schlemmer and Patrick Riley totaling 195 points to claim the Hardscape Event at NCLC. The duo was advised by Barbara Leshyn.
The hardscape event winning team will receive a prize package from ICPI worth up to $4,000 which includes: roundtrip airfare to Louisville, KY for the Hardscape North America trade show, individual accommodations at the Hyatt Regency Louisville, which is the conference headquarters, complimentary trade show admission to Hardscape North America and complimentary registration in the HNA National Installer Championship.
Robert Decesare and Forrest Dorsey of Cuyahoga Community College placed second with 193.00 points, while Brigham Young University – Provo’s Spencer Sanders and Marco Crosland finished third with 192.00 points.
Construction Specialist, Tim Huinker, of Anchor Wall Systems stated, “It’s always fun to help with this event because we get to see a group of young people that show a real passion for this industry. It’s really the future in action, and being able to be a small part to the start of their careers feels good. I participated 25 years ago in this event and it’s great to see how it has grown over the years.”
